It was time to renew our Mozambican visas, so we decided to renew them at the Zimbabwe/Mozambique border. We took a bus part of the way there, then met up with some Iris missionaries about an hour from the border, and they took us the rest of the way. We stayed two nights with a lovely Zimbabwean couple in Mutare that the Iris missionary introduced us to.
Zimbabwe is beautiful or at least Mutare is. The city is completely surrounded by mountains, making it several degrees cooler than where we had come from. It’s absolutely gorgeous. It’s also much more westernized than Mozambique. Most everyone we met there spoke English.
The home of our hosts was gorgeous too. They are very blessed as they have good paying jobs, some of the few in Mutare to have such. Zimbabwe is still recovering from a terrible economic crisis that occurred very recently.
The home of our hosts was very close to the town center, so Jason and I walked to town, enjoyed a nice lunch, and browsed through some of the shops. We got to make dinner with them the second night, and we really enjoyed each other’s company. They invited us to come back again any time, and even said they would love to take us to their church next time and spend more time with us. God has blessed us by allowing us to meet so many wonderful people!
On the way back across the border, we arrived at the border earlier than originally planned so our ride from Dondo had not arrived just yet. We decided to take a stroll along the road on into Mozambique, and we’re so glad we did. We walked several miles at a leisurely pace just enjoying the cooler temperatures, the scenery, and the people we met along the way. We even came across a baby chameleon on the road and had fun playing with him; watching him roll his eyes around backwards the way that they do.
Apparently it's almost unheard of for white people to walk along the road the way that we were, because we got a lot of funny looks. One gentleman came up to see if we needed to exchange currency. He actually spoke English. He asked where we were going, and we told him Dondo (4 hours drive away). His eyes got really wide, and he said, "and you’re WALKING there?" We explained that our ride is coming for us to take us there, and then we all shared a good laugh.
Pretty soon we saw Samuel and Manuel crest the hill in the Land Rover. We weren’t hard to spot! On our way back to Dondo we stopped and picked out a goat (to eat) for our upcoming New Year’s celebration with the kids.
The adventures here are endless!
