We met with some frustration at the Jo-Burg airport when checking our luggage to go to Mozambique. The weight limits South African Airlines had shown online apparently do not apply to a direct flight from South Africa to Mozambique, so unfortunately we had to pay $200 in excess baggage fees. It looks like we’ll be donating a lot of our leftover items to Iris in order to avoid having to pay another $200 on the return flight as well.
After about a 3 hour flight from Johannesburg, we arrived safely in Pemba, Mozambique. Nearly everyone on our flight was going to the school; so many faces, accents, and nationalities. We are really enjoying getting to know people. The ride from the airport was quite an experience. Can you even imagine 50-60 students and their 3 months of supplies crammed on the back of one tarp covered truck? Me neither! Amazingly we all somehow crammed in there.
We arrived on the spacious compound after a short 5-10 minute drive to a sea of red dusty earth and lots of African children who were yelling with excitement.
Jason and I have been appointed “house parents” over our house. We share a 3 bedroom 2 bath house with four ladies of various ages. As a house parent we will help facilitate open communication and relationship building.
